Google Author Rank

Google prepares to roll out Author Rank and SEO changes yet again.

This surprising news is causing mass panic among SEO circles and SEO experts are seeing new opportunities to thrust their speedy fix products into the e-market.

What is it?

Author rank is defined by Google as: “The name of the writer can be used to influence the ranking of web search results by indicating the writer responsible for a particular content piece. Assuming that a given writer has a high reputational score, representing an established reputation for authoring valuable content, then, additional content authored and signed by that writer will be promoted relative to unsigned content or content from less reputable writers in search results.”

What is the impact likely to be?

Updates like Panda and Penguin had been the cause of sudden decline for many websites, but this will not happen this time. It will just be a major advantage of those websites that had been steadily building its author ranks for their website contributors over those that have not prepared for changes such as this.

What factors will determine author rank?

When it comes to the factors needed to determine author rank, the following should be considered:

  • The Page Rank, on average, of an author’s content
  • The +1s and Google+ shares the author’s content gets on average
  • The number of the author’s Google+ circles
  • The give-and-take connections with other Author Rank authors
  • The number of sites that published an author’s content and the authority of those sites
  • The author’s Google+ page’s average number of posts
  • The engagement level such as comments and feedback of an author’s content
  • The external indicators of authority
  • The subscribers and their engagement to the authored video on YouTube
  • The number of importance or authority metrics on social networks like Twitter, Quora, LinkedIn, Slide Share, etc that Google acknowledges as reliable
