A Few Tips On Increasing Search Engine Rankings
Here are a few tips that I have found that have been very beneficial in helping a new website to increase its search engine rankings when starting out.
1. Page Title
The title of your page is very important, and if you choose the title properly then it can surely make a big difference in search engine ranking. The titles themselves should be very specific to the page and also may not have much competition being as specific as they are. The title area is the most important place to include your keyword phrases, so make sure that you utilize it.
2. Search Terms (keywords)
Search terms should be written out in text, instead of graphics. If you use pictures, be sure to give them alt tags. If you want a good rank in search engines then these things that may seem small should be considered, as search engines can read the text but not the graphics.
3. Website Address
Your website’s URL can help you rank higher with the search engines if it contains your keywords. However, don’t think that naming your site after your keywords will always help your rankings – you need to do more than just that. But still, it is one of the factors in improving a search engine ranking.
4. Content
Content is an important factor in high search engine rankings. Make sure that you have plenty of content throughout your site with your target keywords in the articles. It’s also worth doing a search for web sites similar to yours and taking a look at their articles for ideas. Keywords are an important factor and they should be used throughout the content of your website.
I would also highly recommend as a side note if you have not already to start checking your website rank with a free SEO analysis tool such as WooRank.

Hi there,
Thanks for the tips and I will surely apply them to my new websites. The Keyword use does seem to have the most affect, or what do you think?
If the keywords you use are relevant to your website then yes they would. 🙂
Thank you for the tips in this post. Also under comment one might note that the quality and quantity of content both play major roles in search ranking. Comments also a play a big role in your ranking when it comes to content quantity because Google will consider the comments content on your site. What I mean by this is someone might post a blog entry that is four paragraphs long and not get any comments, and then someone else may post a blog entry that is one paragraph long and get 20 comments. The one paragraph long plog entry is weighted higher than the four paragraph entry because there is actually more “content” on the shorter post.
Great tips. I’d like to add a few others:
1) Meta description is a big one too. This is more real estate space to throw your keyword in and also your mini sales pitch to entice the reader to click your site as opposed to the others on the search engine rankings.
2) Domain age also plays a role. Older domains are considered more trusted in Google’s eyes whereas a brand new domain needs to build a bit of trust. This might make it harder to rank a new domain, depending on the competition of the keyword.
Thanks for the tips. I agree with phase2 on how meta tags are helpful too. Some say that they are not valuable, but they don’t take long to add, and they give a little boost, in my experience.
The one thing you need to watch out is the amount of times you have a keyword occurring on a page. Google is working on an algorithm to penalize over-optimization.
I say to hell with Google and go to Yahoo. Your privacy isnt as compromised and their ad network is much better. They may not have as many hits as Google does but their close and they dont rip you off with their ad system. Meaning you dont get banned the second its time for you to get paid 🙂
I agree that keywords are important and you should add them in various ways (such as meta data and alt tags as well as in quality content). It is important to not over use them though – partly because search engines could penalise you but also because you want people to actually find value in your site so they will come back and/or share your site with others – no one wants to read keyword-filled junk.
For titles and alt tags, using keywords as much as possible is good but again keep readers in mind. If your keyword is ‘writer’ but you have a webpage about gramamr, the title would be better as ‘grammar rules’ because it is relevant to the content (whereas ‘writer’ is not so relevant). SImplified example obviously…
Thanks and good blog.
From what I’ve read the Title is important and the Meta Description is still used. Keywords have fallen out of favor, although as long as one doesn’t abuse them it probably doesn’t hurt to list some relevant ones.
I still think if one has a great website that really offers a quality ‘product’ then word gets around. Sometimes word of mouth is the best advertising. Word of mouth now includes sharing on FB and Twitter, etc. If I find a great site, I am sure to notify anyone who I think might be interested…
Thanks to your Tips I learnt more about SEO and learnt how to implement them on my blog. Now I am getting some good results even though I am just experimenting. My blog appears on the first page of google for certain keywords now that I have played well with keyword positioning
Is there a different between SEO ranking and page ranking? I was kind of thinking they were the same thing.
S.O. Price – I think a lot of people underestimate the power/need of metakeywords and descriptions. That kind of goes right up there with underestimating the need of alt tags.
Overall, this article provided wonderful insight and I really appreciate it. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing these awesome tips. I’ll definitely be making some major changes to help increase my Search Engine rankings. I like being ranked highly. I’m sure most people do. I think I need a much simpler address. I’ll start adding better Page Titles too to my pages. Thanks again! These will definitely help me get more traffic and revenue. 🙂
